Pack Mules, Packing Light

A running joke the last few years between us and a few friends has been that the two of us are pack mules. Not just fill your purse to the brim pack mules, but pack mules who fill their arms with about three times more than they should be carrying. Needless to say, this has left us in some interesting situations, especially after a stock up trip to Costco. So for two girls whose  life mission to carry everything they have in one trip from the car to our apartment, packing for three months in one suitcase is a challenge. Especially after we purchased our suitcases and our roommate Nikki pointed out the average packing capacity on the tag. Not exactly what you want to see as we plan for this suitcase to carry our lives for the next three months.

But our minds were set and unchanging that this was going to work.  As we began to look at our closet in comparison to our suitcases, it quickly became apparent that this was going to stretch us to live in a new way. The plan going into this was to fit 7 shirts, 3 pairs of pants, 4 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of workout clothes, 1 set of pajamas, and underwear for a week into this tiny suit case. We were determined – and as we began to share this with others, the topic usually directed towards the question of “Are 4 pairs of shoes actually necessary?”. Our response, absolutely. It was out of the question to not take at least 3 pairs of shoes (its been said a pair of shoes can change your life, just ask Cinderella).

Like playing a game of Tetris, we worked, shoved, and rolled everything we possibly could until we successfully  fit all of those things into our tiny, little suitcases – and to our surprise, they weren’t even bursting! But our successful packing doesn’t take away from the fact of what we are leaving behind. I mean, look at that closet- its glorious! Just like in everything else on this trip, God is working in our hearts. We know living out of a carryon size suitcase for three months is going to be a challenge, but also that it will be another facet in which we can experience this God-sized adventure we don’t want to miss out on.
That being said, we gladly leave behind the two girls who value clothes more than food, and embrace this new adventure of becoming the girls who live with less to experience more, taking this next step in the process of leaving the comforts of home for the adventure ahead.
